hoist our sails, and head

to the south.

We left San Diego for an exciting,
18-month voyage down the
Pacific Coast, through the
Panama Canal, and around the
Caribbean.
WE'RE OFF!!
Starting in February, 2007, as Jay completed his senior year at Coronado High
School, Steve spen
t  five months moving Dakota Rose south in a series of
one- to two-week legs.
He reached Golfito, Costa Rica by June, 2007, the
beginning of the summer hurricane season. Steve put out a general invitation to
potential shipmates to help him on the various legs.

The first leg, in March, w
as one of the longest, travelling from San Diego to
Mazatlan, with stops in Ensenada
, Magdelena Bay and Cabo San Lucas, on
the Baja Penninsula; then crossing the mouth of the Sea of Cortez to Mazatlan
on the Mexican mainland.

Stops in April, May and June include
d Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, Acapulco,
Huatulco and a few overnight anchorages in between.

After spending the summer in Costa Rica, in September Steve w
as joined by
Jay and two of Jay's close friends, Mike Holman and Judd Lyon.
After spending
a month on the Costa Rican Pacific Coast, t
he foursome cruised south and
east, through the Panama Canal and into the Caribbean, with the boys taking a
year off to see at least part of the world before entering college.

J
udd stayed with the boat through Christmas, 2007, at which point he decided
to return home from the British Virgin Islands to start taking college classes and
making car payments. Mike stayed through Spring Break, 2008, and returned
from Martinique. Jay and Steve stayed with it until we reached our goal ...
Grenada, at the bottom of the island chain, from where we started our trip
home. Jay stayed with the boat until early May, flying home from Aruba. Steve
continued on back through the Panama Canal, reaching Golfito, Costa Rica, on
June 28, 2008. From there,
Dakota Rose was loaded onto a Yachtpath ship,
destination Ensenada, Mexico, then returning to San Diego 18 months after we
started.
